How We Can Help?
How to properly test Makeup Samples? (Performance vs. Preference)
Testing makeup formulas is different from skincare. It is less about “waiting” and more about “Stress Testing.”
However, clients often confuse “Formula Quality” with “Personal Color Preference.” Here is how to test efficiently so you can finalize your Private Label collection.
1. The “Swatch” vs. The “Wear” Test
- Don’t just swipe on your hand. The skin on your hand is different from your lips or eyes.
- The Wear Test (4-8 Hours): Apply the product on your face. Go about your day.
- Lipstick: Does it feather (bleed) into fine lines after lunch?
- Foundation: Does it oxidize (turn orange) after 2 hours?
- Eyeshadow: Does it crease on the eyelid?
- If the product stays put for 4-8 hours, the Formula Quality is Excellent.
2. Understanding Trade-offs (Physics of Makeup) You cannot have everything. Understand the chemistry:
- Matte vs. Dry: A “Super Matte” Liquid Lipstick will feel drier than a Gloss. That is not a defect; it is the nature of the film-forming ingredients that make it long-lasting.
- Coverage vs. Natural: A “Full Coverage” Foundation will look heavier than a Tinted Moisturizer.
- Decision Time: Decide what your brand stands for. Do you want “Comfort” or “Indestructible Wear”? Choose the formula that fits your brand identity.
3. Color Testing (Don’t get stuck on one shade)
- “This Red is too blue for me.” -> That is a personal preference, not a quality issue.
- Private Label Reality: We offer a wide range of best-selling global shades. If a specific shade doesn’t suit your skin tone, it might still be a bestseller for your customers.
- Focus on the Texture: If the lipstick applies smoothly and is pigmented, the formula is a winner. You can select the specific colors that fit your target market from our chart.
Summary:
- Test for Performance: Is it pigmented? Is it long-lasting? (Yes/No)
- Don’t Test for “Miracles”: A matte lipstick will never feel like a lip balm.
- Action: If the performance holds up, select your colors and launch.
