How We Can Help?
The “12,000 Unit” Rule: Why do some customizations have high MOQs?
You may have noticed that while Aurora Global Brands offers Private Label at 12 units, certain customizations (like injecting a specific plastic color or custom bottle shapes) suddenly jump to an MOQ of 10,000 – 12,000 units.
This is not an arbitrary number. It is the industrial threshold required to turn on heavy machinery. Here is the science behind the number.
1. The “Purging” Cost (Material Waste) Imagine you want a Baby Blue plastic lipstick tube.
- To produce this, we must melt raw plastic pellets and mix them with blue pigment in a massive Injection Molding Machine.
- If the machine was previously running Black tubes, we have to “purge” (flush) the machine.
- The Reality: It often takes 2,000+ units of waste material just to clear the old color and get the new Baby Blue color to look pure and streak-free.
- If you only order 500 units, we waste more material cleaning the machine than making your product. It is economically impossible.
2. Machine Setup Time vs. Run Time
- Setup: Calibrating a production line for a custom shape or color takes engineers 4-6 hours.
- Run Time: Once running, the machine produces 500 units in minutes.
- Stopping a high-speed industrial line for a small run causes massive downtime costs. The “12,000” number is the break-even point where the setup cost becomes affordable per unit.
3. Which processes trigger the 12k MOQ?
- Injected Color Plastic: Making the bottle material itself pink/blue/nude (instead of painting it).
- Custom Molds: Creating a new physical shape.
- Complex Offset Printing: Printing directly on tubes with 6+ colors.
💡 The Solution: How to get a custom look with Low MOQ?
If you cannot commit to 12,000 units yet, don’t worry. We have developed “Workaround Technologies” to give you a custom look at much lower quantities (1,000 – 3,000 units).
Key Takeaway: Start with our Low MOQ Solutions (Spray/Plating/Hot-Stamping) to build your brand. Once your sales volume hits 10k per run, we can switch to Injection Molding to lower your unit costs.
